Early Life and Coaching Beginnings

Born in 1953, Rich Kotite began his football journey as a player at the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, he embarked on a coaching career, starting as an assistant coach at the University of California, Berkeley.

Kotite's first head coaching role came in 1989 with the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite posting a 12-4 record in his debut season, he faced criticism for his aggressive and confrontational style.

Successes and Controversies in the NFL

In 1994, Kotite joined the New York Jets as their head coach. He led the team to a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance in his first season.

However, Kotite's tenure with the Jets was marred by controversy. He faced accusations of verbal abuse and excessive discipline, leading to his departure after just two seasons.

The Replacements Movie and Legacy

In 2000, Keanu Reeves played the character of Shane Falco in the movie "The Replacements," which was loosely based on the 1987 NFL players' strike.

Kotite, who had coached the Washington Redskins during the strike, served as a consultant on the film. His portrayal in the movie cemented his reputation as a demanding and eccentric coach.

Post-NFL Career and Current Endeavors

After leaving the NFL, Kotite coached at the collegiate level, including stints at Boston College and New Haven University.

Today, Kotite remains involved in football as a motivational speaker and author. He has written several books, including the autobiography "Hard Knocks: A Journey Through the Gutters to the NFL and Back."
