Hurricane Watch Everything You Need To Know

Hurricane Watch: Everything You Need to Know

What is a Hurricane Watch?

A hurricane watch is issued when tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours. It does not mean that a hurricane is expected to make landfall, but it does mean that residents in the affected area should be prepared to take action if necessary.

What to Do During a Hurricane Watch

If you are in an area that is under a hurricane watch, there are a few things you should do to prepare:

  1. Gather essential supplies, such as food, water, first aid kits, and medications.
  2. Secure your home by boarding up windows and doors, and bringing in outdoor furniture.
  3. Make a plan for evacuation in case the hurricane makes landfall.
  4. Stay informed about the hurricane's progress by listening to the radio or watching the news.
  5. Follow the instructions of local officials.

When to Evacuate

If you are in an area that is at risk of flooding or storm surge, you may need to evacuate. Local officials will issue evacuation orders if they believe that it is necessary. If you are ordered to evacuate, do so immediately.

Staying Safe During a Hurricane

If you are unable to evacuate, there are a few things you can do to stay safe during a hurricane:

  1. Stay indoors and away from windows.
  2. Fill your bathtub and sinks with water in case the power goes out.
  3. Have a battery-powered radio on hand to listen for updates.
  4. If you lose power, turn off all appliances and electronics to prevent damage when the power comes back on.

After the Hurricane

Once the hurricane has passed, there are a few things you should do to ensure your safety:

  1. Stay away from downed power lines.
  2. Be aware of the risk of flooding.
  3. Check your home for damage.
  4. Contact your insurance company to file a claim.
  5. Help your community clean up and recover.
